<image:caption>In the photo above, you can see the large trees (orange ribbon) along the roadway. Imagine what it would be like to drive down this roadway without these trees. These trees supply so much shade and character along the roadway. You know what they need here... is a place to sit... Hmmm…. Stay tuned for a solution.</image:caption>

<image:title>JMLA BLOG - LETS SAVE SOME TREES! - ADDITIONAL DESIGN VISUALS</image:title>
<image:caption>Now that we have worked out the design in 2D, it is time to explore the options in 3D. This is one of my favorite parts of the design process, as it really starts to come alive. We decided the best way to show the design was through sections and perspectives. I have always found it to be super helpful to draw perspectives over existing images so it is easy to understand the differences between the existing and proposed conditions. During the design process, we also gathered images of Rain Gardens and Interpretative signage to assist in telling the rest of the story. This was a really fun project to work on and I am looking forward to seeing how the community feels about these design ideas. These are the types of projects I really enjoy, coming up with a creative design solution with my clients input and engagement and in turn creates such a great benefit to the community and the environment. Please feel free to leave a comment on what your thoughts are on the project and visuals. Would love to hear your feedback!</image:caption>

<image:title>JMLA BLOG - LETS SAVE SOME TREES! - TREE REMOVAL PLAN</image:title>
<image:caption>It is now time to look at how many trees are slated to be removed. As you can see from the image above in red, there are many trees that are proposed to be removed. Now the fun begins and is where the questions start to flow through my brain: Can we save all of the trees? What would it take to save all of the trees? Do we need walls to save the trees? How healthy are the trees and what is the benefit to saving the trees?</image:caption>

<image:title>JMLA BLOG - LETS SAVE SOME TREES! - CONCEPT PLAN</image:title>
<image:caption>In the proposed design, the design team's solution was to use an elevated walkway. Love it, this is a great place to start. This would really reduce the disturbance of the existing soils and the number of roots that would need to be removed. Ok so what else can be added to the design? I had a question, how are we going to celebrate these trees? I got it, lets add in overlook areas with interpretative signage to explain the landscape and the benefit of existing trees. These overlook decks are low disturbance (just digging for the footings) and in turn, allow pedestrians a place to sit and take a break. This also gives them the opportunity to learn about the benefit of the trees from the interpretative signage. Just picture for a minute you are taking a walk down the sidewalk on a hot summer's day and all you can think about is I need to stop and have a drink of water. Just then, as you are going down the sidewalk, you come across these overlooks and see a bench in the shade and how relieved you feel. Well, what you may not know is as you are sitting there is a sign explaining the benefits of trees to our environment. That then leads me to my next question…. What else can we do to increase the health of these trees? Let's add in some plantings of shrubs, groundcover, and perennials. This will allow for a nice cover of plantings and will increase the health of the trees over time. An additional benefit is this will deter people from walking on the soil and reduce the soil compaction that will happen on the roots. I have found over the years compaction or poor soils is the number one reason for trees not surviving. The final item we wanted to study is how can we introduce sustainable treatments into the landscape? Once again it can be a great educational experience. This area along the roadway is prone to drainage issues and we saw this as a great opportunity to add in a rain garden to capture the rainwater. This in turn will allow the water to filtrate down through the soil and recharge the groundwater and not puddle on the surface that has other negative health benefits.</image:caption>

<image:title>JMLA BLOG - THE BEST TIME TO PLAN IS WHEN????</image:title>
<image:caption>This is actually not outside of my office window, but my wife's commute to work… I just love this pic. PLANNING A LANDSCAPE PROJECT FOR NEXT SPRING!! I am starting to think about our spring landscape project. As many of you know, we bought a new house here in Vermont (well, new to us!). When we bought this house, one of our goals was to install a pool at the house for the family to enjoy. As a kid, I had a pool and I remember all of the awesome memories I had with our family and friends (late night swimming, pool parties etc.). This past spring when we moved to Vermont and lived with a family member, our kids loved being able to go swimming every day (often they would go in multiple times). When we decided to buy this house, Kate and I made the decision that we were going to buy a pool for the house. Now the fun begins, we have put our deposit down and the pool will be delivered next spring (hopefully!!). Ok now we can breathe and not worry about this until March, right???? Actually, it is the opposite due to COVID. Many people are ordering pools or planning for more landscaped spaces on their property. I have always said the winter is the perfect time to plan for these projects. I am now following my own advice and I am knee deep in planning our pool project for next spring. Not only are we looking at the design of the pool, but we are thinking about the other features that will surround the pool area. Below is a list of things that we are talking about as a family. Outdoor Spaces to complement the pool Outdoor Dining -How do we integrate the grill into the dining area? -We need a space for our outdoor dining table. Outdoor Entertaining -Creating a space that has enough room for us to have family and friends over once COVID is over (fingers crossed). Wood burning Fire Pit -Wood fire pit for the family and friends to all enjoy. I mean who doesn’t love a Fire Pit? Paving Materials -Deck vs pavers -I am actually leaning towards a mix of decking and paving. This will actually create a nice transition from the house as the back door is 1' higher than the ground elevation. Access into the pool. -Do we want the pool to be tucked into the hillside and build a wall to retain the grade? Or place it on top of the hill. -On top of the hill is actually growing on me and would create a nice space for the pool. Next step is drawing up a concept plan to explore the many options.</image:caption>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5eac11d0c22c1974ca6cb9e0/1604508842932-J4XIPQVDPE620F7SS4YC/Early+Landscape+Concept+Sketch.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>JMLA BLOG - THE BEST TIME TO PLAN IS WHEN????</image:title>
<image:caption>A sketch I produced for one of my recent projects looking at the pool orientation. When we put the deposit down on the pool, the company said hopefully we can deliver this in the spring. There is still a tremendous back log on pools from COVID and it doesn’t look like it is going to get any better. The other thing to think about is that contractors are already booking into the summer of next year. I know many contractors are really hoping for a short winter as they have so many projects already on the books. Not to mention while you are inside during those long cold winter days, it is really fun to daydream and think about spring and summer all while planning for these projects. So far this fall, I have had multiple clients come to me looking for a Master Plan so they can start to plan for the spring time. I have recommended to these clients the sooner you start talking to contractors, the better your chances are of having the project completed next spring or summer. The interesting thing to me was because of COVID many families are reassessing their priorities and where to invest their money. There are many people out there who want to invest in renovating their current yard. Families are looking at how they can shape spaces for their family to enjoy and friends once COVID is over. The other trend I am seeing is people want to improve their property, but they don’t know who they should call. I have been telling people whether you want to hire me or not, you want to talk with a Landscape Architect. They have the education and experience to help you visualize your dream property. Stay tuned as I will provide updates on our progress of our pool project. Maybe you want to hear more, if so feel free to email me at jay@jmillerlandscape.com or you can call or text me on my cell 802.535.8586 to discuss anytime. I am always glad to help. <image:caption>Expanding the Dream: With every design that I work on, I always ask myself if there is an opportunity to add functionality, resolve issues, or enhance the desired impact. Layout: I saw the opportunity to push the proposed wall away from the existing garage for two reasons. First, moving the wall out framed the front door to draw your eye. Also, this created symmetry which creates a more pleasing effect. Flow and Functionality: In the original request, there was no thought given to a path leading to the flag pole area. By adding a path, the flag pole becomes a destination point and by building benches into the the walls surrounding the flag pole, a new sitting area was created. Size and Shape: Not only was the flag pole area increased in size, the curved wall at the end of the garage was changed slightly from the original plan. The simple curve complements the site better and creates a cleaner, more unified look. Focal Points: As you enter the driveway, there are two new stone columns that greet visitors as they arrive at the entry court. This sketch accomplished the client’s goal of having a more dramatic entrance sequence to their property.</image:caption>
